ACORN Faces Further Legal Woes

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) is facing even more legal troubles. ACORN, a longtime ally of President Obama and an outspoken proponent of his health care agenda, is now under further investigation by Louisiana’s Attorney General Buddy Caldwell for embezzlement totaling $5 million.

Although ACORN originally claimed that they had only fraudulently obtained $1 million, an internal review by the board of directors indicates otherwise, determining that “the amount allegedly embezzeled from the community organization was $5 million, well more than the amount previously reported,” according to WWL, New Orleans-based television and radio stations. The prosecutor’s new figure was reported in a subpoena he filed last week.

This is only the latest setback faced by ACORN, who just weeks ago offered legal and tax advice to undercover reporters who pretended to seek counsel on developing a brothel for several underage immigrants. Since this discovery, in addition to reports released that prove the community organizing group owed millions of dollars in backed taxes, the group has halted its operations indefinitely. There were also accusations of voter registration fraud and intimidation by opponents during the 2008 election.

ACORN was undoubtedly an asset to President Obama’s campaign and has remained an integral player in their grassroots mobilization of activists during the health care reform debate. The organization is led by a board that includes far Leftist John Podesta, who runs Center for American Progress, and Andrew Stern of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). ACORN, who claims to be a nonprofit, has been the beneficiary of $58 million of taxpayer money in two decades. Congress has since voted to cut off their federal funding and many states, including Louisiana, have followed suit.

More Trouble for the Left: SEIU to Join the Ranks of ACORN?

Friday, September 18th, 2009

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) might soon experience the same fate as their partners at ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now): likely extinction.

Looks like the legal troubles of the SEIU could rival those of their allies at ACORN, with whom they have a long-standing relationship in political activism, as one of their leaders has just been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

A union boss from Sacramento, Calif., Jaime Feliciano, was convicted, after entering no contest pleas, of “child molestation, possession of child pornography and manufacturing child pornography.” Aside from “leading” the thousands of members of Service Employees International Union Local 1000, Feliciano also served in California’s Department of Insurance division.

It is important to note that Feliciano already had “previous convictions of child molestation and failure to register as a sex offender.” Critics of the SEIU wonder how such a seedy criminal background could be willfully ignored by one of the nation’s largest labor unions and how they could, in good conscience, allow him to head such a significant chapter of their operation.

In September 2008, investigators with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department initiated an investigation into Feliciano following a tip. Deputy District Attorney Lani Biafore said detectives recovered thousands of images of child pornography from Feliciano’s computers, as well as images of him molesting a young girl.

Biafore said Feliciano persuaded the girl and her mother to not report the crimes. Sacramento County sheriff’s investigators later identified the victim, who told authorities that Feliciano had molested her on numerous occasions.

This is only the latest of the SEIU’s woes. With $1.5 billion in liabilities and $1 billion in assets, it is apparent that the $500 million deficit they run makes it difficult for them to pay out pensions.Such debts drive them to support a public option plan, which would shift the burden of providing health care, especially into retirement, for their dues-paying members from the SEIU to the government (well, taxpayers).

EFCA (Employee Free Choice Act), “or card check,” legislation complicates things further. Card check would require a public vote to determine whether or not a work place is unionized. Those opposed to card check, even some very outspoken Democrats, fear that such a provision would catalyze the kind of bullying that unions are notorious for employing, allowing pressure to be placed on workers to join a union. EFCA would be heard in the same committee, Health Education Labor and Pensions (HELP), in the Senate, the same group that controls health care bills.

With President Obama indebted to the unions for their support, it makes sense that they would support his health care reform proposals, especially a public option, to alleviate financial hardships and ensure political expediency for card check.

But it seems that their hopes are vanishing daily. With close ties to ACORN, the SEIU is vulnerable to also undergo investigations, as the two groups have worked together for years. Moreover, their public policy outlook is also grim, with the public option looking less and less like a possibility and card check under fire from both sides of the aisle.

Having a union boss get caught (AGAIN) for child molestation and juvenile pornography would ordinarily be a huge concern for any major organization. It seems, however, that this is just another bullet-point in their long list of anxieties they face in the months to come.

SEIU Requests Contact Info for Kansas HCBS Providers

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Originated from Statehousecall.org

Current Medicaid law lets some people in Medicaid get home and community-based services (HCBS) rather than having to go to a hospital, clinic or other institution. Understandably, it’s more attractive to patients, though not necessarily cheaper for taxpayers.

The SEIU, a union of government employees is a big fan of ever-greater government involvement in health care, and understandably so: It gives them more opportunities to snag members and their dues.

The SEIU in Kansas has asked the state for the names and addresses of health care professionals who provide care under the state’s HCBS program. A state representative and Kansas Watchdog have some questions about the request, as well as the union’s relationship with former governor and now HHS Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius.

Special Report: Paid Astroturfers

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Let us kick this article off by focusing first on the town hall event held last Saturday, August 29th, and sponsored by Representative for the 1st Congressional District of New Hampshire Carol Shea Porter in the community of Portsmouth. As GraniteGrok points out, the meeting was eventful enough considering that questions asked of the Congressional representative by members of the one hundred and fifty fortunate attendees who made it into the building where the forum was being held were chosen via a lottery system. Yep, there is no chance whatsoever that plants acting on behalf of the White House would be called upon for softball questions over actual concerned constituents. Oh, but it got much better. Outside, after the event was concluded, it became practically a who’s who of far-left political activism. Paid volunteers from LaRouche PAC, MoveOn.org, Organizing for America, SEIU, and Sierra Club, to name just a few, gathered to work the crowd leaving the town hall meeting.

Notice how whenever someone asks them a question like what they are doing there they instantly begin chanting something or other. What is with liberals and simply answering questions? I know they are indoctrinated in college to always question authority, but is this how they are brainwashed to respond when they themselves are questioned?

What makes these far-left socialist activists all the more intriguing, GraniteGrok notes, is that many of these same individuals showed up two days later at another town hall event, this time sponsored by Frank Guinta, mayor of Manchester and the Republican candidate vying for Rep. Carol Shea Porter’s seat, in the community of Exeter.

Next we have an organizer for Healthcare for America Now instructing Obamacare supporters outside a town hall meeting sponsored by Jan Schakowsky, representative for Illinois’s 9th Congressional District, on August 31st in the community of Skokie how to block opponents from questioning the congresswoman. He tells them that “if they stand up and start asking questions, and you’re in the area, simply stand up and start chanting, ‘Health care now! Health care now!’” Apparently preventing others from expressing their concerns about the direction in which this country is heading is in his frame of mind considered ‘civil’.

Another Healthcare for America Now organizer outside that same event was handing out pre-printed signs to ‘grassroots’ supporters of the president’s health care proposal. She added, “If you don’t sneak it (the sign) in, just drop it at the front door, we’ll collect” and re-use them on Wednesday for the public-option vigil.”

The BlogProf reports on the paid counter-protestors at a town hall event sponsored by Representative for the 9th Congressional District of Michigan Gary Peters located at West Bloomfield High School. Roughly two thousand people showed up to the forum, but only eight hundred were allowed admittance. Here’s the hitch, though – the meeting was heavily stacked in favor of the Democratic representative.

According to Oakland County Politics, roughly eight hundred Obamacare supporters, organized by (yet again) Healthcare for America Now, were ordered to arrive at the high school two and a half hours prior to the scheduled start time for the event. Even though this is obviously during normal work hours, it worked well with the individuals involved because after all we know that liberal hippies don’t actually work. Certainly then the meeting was stuffed with Obamacare supporters who could all be easily be identified via the “Health Care for All” stickers they wore on their shirts. Ugh, everyone in this country already is entitled to health care! It is against federal law for a hospital to turn away anyone, even if they do not have insurance. If you are going to protest something or attempt to make a political attempt, at least get the facts right. But then again when have facts ever mattered to these people?

Outside the event, A Conservative Teacher reports, about fifty or so Obamacare supporters carried signs that said, “Standing Together for Health Insurance Reform,” paid for by Healthcare for America Now and using the same font the Obama campaign has used since the early days of the 2008 presidential campaign. Another thirty to forty-five counter-protestors carried signs that were later stacked up near the entrance to the building that used the same poster-board material, the same handwriting, and the same color scheme, though each one had a slightly different message. Despite the claims by each individual carrying one of these signs that they made it themselves, the Detroit News reports that a woman named Karen MacKenze created them all. There are several juicy tidbits pertaining to Mrs. MacKenze. First and foremost, according to Open Secrets, she does not belong to Rep. Peters’s district. Furthermore, she is married to an activist Oakland County judge who also happens to be chairman of the local Sierra Club.

If ACORN Can’t Pay Their Taxes, How Can They Pay for Activism?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Pelican Institute for Public Policy, the premier think-tank in Louisiana, uncovered evidence last week that proves that the far-Left activism group, ACORN, and several “closely-related groups” owe more than $1 million in backed state and federal taxes. These findings, validated by Orleans Parish court records, also indicated that the organization “paid off more than $1.1 million in late bills since January of 2008.”

The organization, based in New Orleans, La. and operating in partnership with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), has accounts delinquent since 2004, including one tax bill totaling $545,000. ACORN (Associations of Community Organizations for Reform) and its affiliate companies have outstanding federal tax liabilities of $1 million and four Louisiana tax bills of at least $28,000. In March 2008 alone, nearly $1.2 million in federal tax liens were filed against ACORN and its related groups with only some of them being cleared upon payment.

According to Pelican Institute for Public Policy’s report, Citizens Consulting, the accounting division of ACORN, owed the state of Louisiana more than $300,000 in unpaid taxes as recently as January 2009, the debts of which were paid just a few months ago. The think tank also maintains that ACORN has not paid withholding taxes for the state for “many quarters since the fall of 2002.”

Currently, some, but not all, member organizations of Team ACORN are tax-exempt non-profits, but the Louisiana policy institution asserts that “does not excuse them from paying payroll taxes, both the employer’s share and the amounts withheld from an employee’s check.”

During the course of just four years spanning from 2002 to 2006, ACORN was the beneficiary of more than $5.4 million grants from the U.S. federal government, who channeled funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (Washington Examiner). Even ACORN’s own legal representation admits the “confederation of corporations may lack the internal financial controls to ensure that money granted to one group isn’t shared with another.”

Now, disgruntled former board members of the liberal activism non-profit have joined with ACORN adversaries and Congressional leadership to demand an audit of ACORN and its partners, which would accompany a state probe recently started by the office of the Louisiana Attorney General, Buddy Caldwell.

“ACORN is clearly a partisan organization and their work should be funded by supporters, not taxpayers,” said Pelican Institute president Kevin Kane. “Their failure to pay taxes adds insult to injury. It is time for legislators and regulators to take a closer look at this organization.”

Many Americans might find it hard to comprehend how ACORN would be unable to pay their taxes, especially after they received more than $53 million in federal funds since 1989. This fact alone raises concerns as to the questionable priorities and ethics of a federal government that funnels taxpayer money to sponsor such an overtly-partisan operation.

ACORN, criticized as “radical” and employing “mob-like” tactics, brags that they are “the nation’s largest grassroots movement, with more than 400,000 members in 110 cities.” Important to note: Americans for Prosperity, a free-market grassroots advocacy non-profit, has more than 700,000 members throughout all 50 states. ACORN says that their membership is made up of “low- and moderate-income families, working together for social justice and stronger communities.”

ACORN has been scrutinized for their behavior on the national stage, with repeated allegations of the group conducting voter-registration fraud in 12 states across the country. Pelican Institute for Public Policy asserts that these incidents, facilitated by ACORN’s Project Vote program, “essentially ran a thinly-veiled effort to push Democratic candidates and recruit new dues-paying ACORN members.” While several employees have been arrested for fraud, the organization itself has never been formally charged with committing a crime.

Elizabeth Kingsley, legal counsel for ACORN, admitted in an October 2008 article in the New York Times that it would be impossible to ignore the “tight relationship between Project Vote and ACORN”  in documenting that “Project Vote’s money had been used in a strictly nonpartisan manner.” Before the public became aware of this embezzlement scandal, the Project Vote board was staffed with employees and members of ACORN.

“Ms. Kingsley’s report raised concerns not only about a lack of documentation to demonstrate that no charitable money was used for political activities but also about which organization controlled strategic decisions,” Beatty added.

Today, ACORN is spending its time (and money) promoting President Obama’s health care reform agenda, working in cooperation with groups like the SEIU, Organizing for America and moveon.org to hold rallies across the country to express support for his public option plan. Their staff and members pack town halls in every state, sporting ACORN t-shirts and exhibiting aggressive behavior at the events.

Like the SEIU, who faces more than $500 million in debts, ACORN sees financial woes as no obstacle, and instead, focus their efforts in both money and manpower to rally support for President Obama. Nagging tax pains will not distract these liberal activism groups from vocalizing their support for the public option, and embarrassment from public criticism of their behavior do not seem to faze them. Now, they must wait with baited breath for their efforts to elect President Obama to be met with generous reciprocation.

Recess Rally Round-Up

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

recessrallyLet us kick off this tour of the recess rallies held ‘round the country this past Saturday with the hundreds of protestors who braved the unusually high California summer temperatures, which reportedly neared the century mark that day, in the town of Pleasanton and marched on the district office of Representative Jerry McNerney (D-11th Congressional District) to demand he hold a town hall meeting. Representative McNerney has staunched refused to meet with his constituents and when asked why he has hid away from the very people who got him into office, staff members refused to ask the question and demanded the camera, which was recording the event, be turned off.

Pipe Line News has full coverage of the turnout as well as video of the rally:

Rep. McNerney is certainly walking on thin ice. Sure, the district he represents does reside within the San Francisco area, an infamous hot bed of socialistic liberalism known throughout the country, but it also has a partisan voting index of R+1. It isn’t heavily Republican, admittedly, but neither is it a safe zone for him politically.

The Tennessee Tea Party organized rallies in front of the offices of Marsha Blackburn, representative for the 7th Congressional District, in Franklin and Jim Cooper, representative for the 5th Congressional District, in Nashville. It was in Nashville that the tea party protestors clashed, though not violently, with over a hundred pro-Obamacare drones.

In addition to these, there was also a rally held in Knoxville in front of the Federal building. Below is a video of the protest:

Slightly east, about one hundred and fifty people showed up in front of the office of Heath Shuler, representative for the 11th Congressional District of North Carolina, to voice their opposition to Obama’s government-run health care proposal. The Asheville Tea Party group sponsored the rally. While the attendance does seem rather low compared to others, Rep. Shuler has already stated that he will oppose the president’s health care bill.

Jim and Rachel Pereira have photos – though, sadly, no video – of the thousands who showed up to the rally held in Orlando, Florida. Among the attendees were Hulk Hogan and his daughter. Mr. Hogan was also promoting his new website, Guaranteed Lower Property Tax.

Continuing across the state of Florida, about two-dozen protestors showed up in front of the district office for Representative Kathy Castor (D-West Tampa). Rep. Castor is now infamous for the town hall event held in early August, which she attended at the last minute and where SEIU hit men roughed up a business owner named Randy Arthur. Among those in attendance were members of the newly formed Citizens Protecting the Republic from nearby Pasco County. The Tampa Tribune reported that only one counter protestor showed up. Carol’s Closet has a full report on the Tampa Recess Rally.

Moving up north to Birmingham, Michigan, it is reported that somewhere between seven hundred and fifty to over a thousand protestors showed up in opposition to the president’s proposed federal takeover of the health care industry. The Blog Prof, who was in attendance at the event, correctly points out how nearly every sign was hand-made, not professionally manufactured like the ones held up by the drones of ACORN, SEIU, and Organizing for America, and that majority of those who showed up were seniors. Also in attendance at the rally were conservative Michigan politicians including Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, Oakland County Commissioner David W. Potts, and Oakland County Sheriff and Michigan gubernatorial candidate Michael Bouchard.

Here’s a quick video overview of the crowd:

The Blog Prof, Conservative Teacher, and the Detroit News have additional coverage of the rally.

Heading out west, there were a number of rallies held in opposition to Obamacare in the state of Missouri, two of which were quite notable. The first was held in front of the office of Senator Claire McCaskill in St. Louis. It was closed that day, so unlike before, Gateway Pundit noted, there was no one to lock constituents out and call the police. Hundreds showed up, some even decked out with fife and drums. Among those in attendance was Kenneth Gladney who was brutally attacked by a SEIU thug in the parking lot following a town hall event in St. Louis earlier this summer. The local ACORN organization must have been falling down on the job considering there were only fifteen pro-Obamacare counter protestors that showed up across the street. Gateway Pundit notes that while there were no altercations with the police, there were some who became uncomfortable with a police officer who walked up and down the sidewalk across the street swinging his club around.

Gateway Pundit, 24th State, Josh Schroeder, and American Power have tons of photos as well as additional information regarding this rally.

The other was held in front of the Brentwood office of Representative for the 3rd Congressional District of Missouri Russ Carnahan where the St. Louis Tea Party Coalition rallied one thousand one hundred protestors.

Below is video of the event:

About three hundred protestors showed up at Representative Carnahan’s Crystal City office. Although Mr. Carnahan did not have the gall to meet his constituents himself, a registered Democrat was kind enough to leave a note taped to his office door telling what he missed … in addition to the notice that he was not voting for him in the upcoming election. Sharp Elbows has further coverage of the protest, including more videos like the one below.

The St. Louis Tea Party Coalition has estimated that over two thousand protestors were in attendance in all five rallies held throughout the greater St. Louis area on Saturday, August 22nd.

Even further west, the Tucson Tea Party estimates as many as a thousand protestors showed up at one point or another during the course of the recess rally held in front of office of Representative for the 8th Congressional District of Arizona Gabrielle Giffords.

All-in-all, early estimates suggest that as many fifteen thousands individuals attended the recess rallies held across the country on Saturday!

Socialist Rep. Waters Calls Opposition Senators ‘Neanderthals’

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Self-proclaimed Congressional Socialist Maxine Waters, Representative for the 35th Congressional District of California, held a heavily pro-Obamacare rally … umm, ‘town hall’ meeting on Saturday, August 22nd, at Los Angeles Southwest College. Roughly four hundred individuals, many of whom had Obama bumper stickers on their cars, attended the two-hour plus raucous-free event.

Representative Waters is the quintessential example of the Chicago-style thug politics that has overtaken Capitol Hill since Barack Obama became president of the United States. Her comment, in referencing the notable absence of vocal oppositional opinions, “I sent them a message … don’t try that with Maxine Waters,” proves that point.

Ms. Waters took time during the event to bash former-Alaska governor and former-vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the only time the California Congresswoman was met with loud boos from the audience, for her popularization of the ‘death panels’ myth, saying, Why would any member of Congress, especially those of us who are grandmothers, want to pull the plug on Grandma?” In response then, here is a question for Rep. Waters: if the ‘death panels’ Ms. Palin advocated against were simply a myth as you have claimed, how is that the Senate Finance Committee removed the provision from the president’s health care reform bill? How can one remove something that didn’t exist in the first place? But maybe she’s right. Obama isn’t going to pull the plug on grandma if she needs a pacemaker at 100 years of age; he’s just going to give her two painkillers, expecting her not to call him in the morning. That’s all!

If the president’s health care reform bill, as it stands now, were to come up for a vote when Congress reconvened after Labor Day, Ms. Waters said she would vote against it. Rep. Waters stated, bottom-line, that “she would refuse to vote for a healthcare reform package” unless it expressly included “a provision for creating a government-run medical insurance plan that would compete with private insurers.” One hopes, if this does happen, that it doesn’t turn out to be like the post office, as the president seemed to suggest at his own ‘town hall’ event in Colorado. “The healthcare system is broken,” she said to a cheering crowd, “and it’s got to be fixed.” Rep. Waters continued to spread the ’47 million uninsured’ myth that has continuously been perpetuated by filmmaker Michael Moore and the other far-left fear mongers who want to shove socialized medicine down the throats of Americans.

Rep. Waters, in spite of the serious nature of the health care debate in this country, kept things lively during her event, joking that President Barack Obama “has been trying to reach across the aisle.” Oh, wait … she was serious? As has been stated on this site before, so far in the health care debate this summer we have seen the White House tell supporters of the president’s health care proposal – in particular ACORN and SEIU – to ‘punch back twice as hard’ against tea party protestors, progressive Democrats threaten a leading moderate Democrat in the health care reform fight with losing his chairmanship if he didn’t stop talking to Congressional Republicans, and the Democratic leadership forcing moderate ‘Blue Dog’ Democrats to submit to their rule. Again, where’s the compromising and reaching across the aisle?

Ms. Waters then made an appeal to the president’s sense of vanity, saying, “The people of this country elected you and gave you a Democratic majority in the House and the Senate.” “Yes, we know that you are a nice man, that you want to work with the opposite side of the aisle. But there comes a time when you need to drop that and move forward,” Waters said. “We’re saying to you, Mr. President, ‘Be tough. Use everything that you’ve got. Do what you have to do. And we have your back…’ ” So much for the president’s campaign promise of bi-partisan congressional cooperation. But, then again, this really isn’t surprising considering all the other campaign promises he’s broken. Heck, even the far-left Air America Media has begun to make note of that fact.

Not only are we going to do everything we can to organize and put pressure on the senators — some of whom are Neanderthals – we’re going to say to the president, ‘We want you to use every weapon in your basket in order to get those senators to do what they should be doing,’ “ Waters said. Wow, name-calling. Real mature, Rep. Waters. Echoing a statement made by RNC Chairman Michael Steele, if you’ve had the votes, why then haven’t you passed it already? What is holding you back?

Leaked Memo Suggests Widespread Democratic Astroturfing in Washington

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Northwest Digest has brought to light a memo, leaked to them by a high-ranking member of the Washington State Democratic Central Committee and authenticated by several sources, which seems to suggest a widespread effort is in the works on behalf of the Washington State Democratic leadership and fellow liberal drone groups – ACORN, Organizing for America, SEIU, etc. – to pack town hall meetings with Obamacare supporters.

The memo, which originated from the office of Representative for the 1st Congressional District of Washington Jay Inslee, was first delivered to Dwight Pelz, Washington State Democratic Chairman, then forwarded onto labor union hit-men and upper level state Democrats including FUSE Executive Director Aaron Ostrom, State Director for Organizing for America (Obama’s personal civilian army) Dustin Lambro, and Washington State Labor Council Political Director Benjamin Lawver with a note instructing recipients to “keep turning people out for these!”

It is not at all revealing, let alone unexpected at this point in the health care debate, to see Democratic leadership in various states such as Washington now organizing their followers in a seemingly futile effort to mount a last-minute counter offensive against grassroots town hall protestors across the country. It does bare noting, however, simply for the fact that at the same time the White House and the higher Escalon of the Congressional Democratic leadership continue to paint tea party protestors as violent drones acting on the whim of the RNC and the insurance/pharmaceutical industries liberal interest groups are coordinating with the DNC and dressing-up Obamacare astroturfers as members of a true grassroots revolution, which it isn’t.

Despite the Short Notice, a Small Group of Protesters Brave the Rain to Send their Message on Health Care Reform to the Obama Administration in Chicago

Monday, August 24th, 2009

A HealthCare HorseRace Exclusive

CHICAGO-Outside of Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago, two small groups of protesters against and supporters for the President’s health care reform package braved pouring rain to send their message to the Obama Administration.

About 10 to 12 protesters/supporters showed up across from Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago to catch a glimpse of the Vice President and his motorcade coming into the West Chicago hospital.  In what was considered a peaceful gathering, there were two different messages being sent as the Chicago Police put the two camps in one viewing area designated by the authorities.

An unnamed supporter of the Obama backed reform told HealthCare HorseRace that “with people losing their insurance and fearing that they may be next to lose their health care is a big reason that I came today.”  When asked about Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois refusing to hold town hall meetings on HR 3200, the Obama supporter said: “I do not have to worry if the Senator (Durbin) is going to have to hold listening sessions because I feel he is one of the best Senators in the nation out of all 50 states.” Many of the Obama supporters who were in attendance had signs aimed at the Vice President to finish the job on health care reform signaling their support for a public option that may get dropped by Democratic leadership.

A health insurance broker who works in the Chicagoland Area told HealthCare HorseRace that he does not want the IRS to tell him how he should sell individual health insurance. This same broker stated: “I do not want the IRS to fine me $2,300 if I am being forced to sell health insurance to people that do not need the health insurance.” Also, he mentioned that many younger people ages 21 to 34 opt not to take health insurance because they are healthy and don’t get sick that often.  The protesters who opposed health care reform had signs with messages like “Hands Off” and “I will take liberty instead.”

Despite the absence of labor unions like SEIU from the event on Thursday, the Chicago Tea Party Patriots did come out to share their views on Health Care Reform.  One organizer of the Chicago Tea Party Patriots said to HealthCare HorseRace that they are planning more protests including one on Recess Rally Day, August 22nd, at Congressman Dan Lipinski’s (D-Illinois-3rd) Office.  Another group from the Northern suburbs of Chicago is organizing a protest at a town hall run by Congresswoman Melissa Bean (D-Illinois-14th).  Bean, a two term Democrat, has been under fire for limiting attendance of her town halls to Chamber of Commerce members and charging a $25 entrance fee to attend. Bean is considered a very vulnerable Democrat and according to some of her constituents that the Congresswoman is trying to maintain a low profile because of her vulnerability. Bean’s district is considered a significantly Republican district according to the Cook Partisan Voting Index and according to news sources like Congressional Quarterly and Politico rank Bean as one of the most vulnerable Democrats in 2010.

Oh, How Sweet It Is… to be David Axelrod

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

In the cruel world of American politics, a dutiful staffer will toil long into the night mulling over phone banking lists and reviewing profiles of high-power donors. He exchanges his personal life for 6 a.m. conference calls and his car becomes a billboard in transit. His diet consists of stale coffee and an endless supply of nicotine. An unenviable existence, to say the least, but one that is endured in hopes of seeing his boss declared victorious on election night and of seizing the resulting opportunities that lay ahead.

For David Axelrod, those opportunities were beyond imagine. As Barack Obama’s top campaign adviser, Axelrod carefully formulated the strategy and framing that ultimately earned the far Left U.S. Senator from Illinois the Democratic Party’s nomination and eventually, the White House. Such a feat was to be rewarded even more handsomely than previous campaign managers, who typically cram themselves into strategic, though often unwelcome, roles in the new administration.

President Obama bestowed upon Axelrod the title of “Senior Adviser” for his fledgling administration. After all, the president certainly made no secret of his plans to fill the White House with his Chicago-based allies. Axelrod joined the ranks of Windy City natives, such as then-Congressman Rahm Emanuel, who later became the White House Chief of Staff, and his brother, Dr. Ezekiel “Zeke” Emanuel, who was tasked with crafting health care reform legislation for the Administration. As if hanging out with his hometown buddies wasn’t enough of an incentive, Axelrod was encouraged by his national agenda-setting role and a $200,000 annual salary.

Despite all the perks of living a politico’s dream of further expanding his sphere of influence, Axelrod appeared dissatisfied by the substantial pay cut of shifting from the private to public service sector. According to a November 2008 Politico report, the political strategist’s firm collected more than $35 million in profits since 1998 for their extensive lobbying and consulting work, $2.5 million of which came from Obama’s presidential campaign, and Axelrod would be forced to decide whether to take a leadership role in the most liberal White House in American history, or to stick with his firm in Chicago.

Luckily for David Axelrod, he never actually had to make that choice. Axelrod began his work in the White House, but did not entirely abandon his booming consulting company. Certainly, this seems like a bit of a dilemma of ethics, with one man receiving a taxpayer-funded salary, while also maintaining private sector-based income in the same field. But in typical Obama Administration fashion, this sort of moral conundrum would not deter the President’s senior adviser, who sought to capitalize on the country’s current hot button issue: health care reform.

While Axelrod worked behind the scenes to craft policy that would lead to a government overhaul of the medical industry, his firm in Chicago lobbied special interest groups to earn massive media contracts that would help dictate political discourse during the debate. According to an August 19, 2009 Associated Press report, President Obama’s efforts to push his health care reform agenda have created a “financial windfall in the election offseason to Democratic consulting firms that are closely connected” to the President and Axelrod.

These coalition groups are currently running “at least $24 million in pro-overhaul ads” with the help of GMMB, a consulting group led by a “top Obama campaign strategist” and AKPD Message and Media, the firm owned by none other than David Axelrod. Michael Axelrod, David’s son, now manages the day-to-day affairs of his father’s AKPD Message and Media, aided in part by his employee, David Plouffe, Obama’s presidential campaign manager.

One of their biggest clients, Americans for Stable Quality Care, is comprised of political and financial heavyweights like the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), American Medical Association (AMA), FamiliesUSA and PhRMA, the last promising to pony up $150 million to promote the President’s health care reform agenda.

While the Associated Press concedes that there is “no evidence that Axelrod directly profited from the group’s ads,” they also admit that he will draw $2 million from the firm over the next four years. The larger issue, Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics, contends, is a “network of relationships and overlapping interests” that could become a “problem as Obama tries to win the public over on health care and fulfill his promise to change the way Washington works.”

Indeed, candidate Obama repeatedly condemned such “inside baseball” dealings, lamenting that this sort of behavior leads to the American people distrusting lawmakers to govern responsibly. Even if Axelrod is not, as he claims, directly profiting from these contracts, is it not political patronage for his firm, and really, his son, to enjoy profitable deals with longtime Obama cohorts, like the SEIU?

And even despite attempts of both David Axelrod and AKPD to distance themselves from each other, AKDP and GMBB, a partner firm in the health care reform media blitz, both “proudly proclaim their connections to Obama on their Web sites.”

AKPD has a full page on Axelrod that includes pictures of Obama. In one photo, Obama hugs Plouffe on election night.

“We are deeply honored to have been part of Barack Obama’s historic campaign to change America and the world,” GMMB says on its Web site. GMMB’s partners include Jim Margolis, a senior strategist for Obama’s presidential campaign.

Fox News reports that  leading lobbying law expert Kenneth Gross is not at all shocked by this relationship, finding it to be only natural for such a profitable favor to be given to AKPD and GMMB.

“To victor go the spoils. The health care message is very much like a campaign message and it’s not surprising they would use the same vendor that knows the substance of the administration’s issues,” Gross said.

It seems that the two consulting groups have even more explaining to do, as it is apparent they have profited tremendously from David Axelrod’s political affiliations on a national level (Associated Press).

Both GMMB and AKPD also have worked for Democrats this year. The Democratic National Committee paid AKPD at least $106,000 for polling, media production, communication consulting and travel costs from February through April. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee paid GMMB roughly $75,000 from February through June for ads. And GMMB took in at least $9,000 this year from Senate leader Reid’s political action committee for communications consulting.

Republicans argue that such patronage is deplorable and should serve as a cause for alarm for the American people (Fox News).

But House Republicans insist PhRMA had a hand in hiring the firms — and continue to question the motives of both the drug lobby and the White House.

“Out of all the firms Pharma could choose to do their media work, they chose David Axelrod’s firm, which still maintains Axelrod’s son on the payroll and owes Axelrod himself $2 million,” House Republican Conference spokesman Mike Lloyd wrote in an e-mail.

“It’s hard to believe the public can be assured that David Axelrod isn’t influenced by any of this in the course of the health care debate. For an administration that promised ‘change’ and to be above even an appearance of impropriety this does not even come close to passing the smell test,” Lloyd wrote.

When President Obama proclaimed that he wanted to bring about “change,” what he really meant was that he wanted more of the same, just with liberals at the helm. He got his wish with David Axelrod.
