Somewhere around Interstate 10’s Exit 206 in Louisiana is a tiny town called Reserve. Situated just in between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, the community is located in St. John Parish, a heavily agricultural and economically modest town known especially for its Army National Guard base.
The biggest thing ever to happen in the history of Reserve, La. occurred Monday at 11:30 a.m. Four cabinet secretaries from the Obama Administration visited the small town on their Rural Tour, speaking in 10 different communities across the U.S. The event featured a panel discussion and townhall-style question-and-answer session with Secretary Hilda Solis of the Department of Labor, Secretary Kathleen Sebelius of the Department of Health and Human Services, Secretary Tom Vilsack of the Department of Agriculture and Secretary Eric Shineski of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Cars lined the block with some people walking 15 or more minutes to park and enter the building. The overflow from the crowd led into the halls of the Army National Guard building, with some trying to get a peek into the packed room. One estimate indicated at least 800 people were in attendance. National and local media outlets lined the back of the room with cameras shoved next to each other, allowing barely enough room for all the reporters.
The Obama Administration probably didn’t expect that kind of crowd. After all, it was not until blogger Jeff Blanco, the publisher of louisianaconservative.com, broke the story that anyone knew about it all. Surely, the Administration hoped to fill the room with more supporters, likely from ACORN, which is based out of nearby New Orleans.
ACORN and a few other left-leaning groups were present, but the majority of attendees were not at all sympathetic to President Obama’s health care reform proposals, including the Tea Party organizations from around the entire state of Louisiana, the Louisiana Right to Life and activists from Americans for Prosperity. Additionally, folks who heard about it that day in the mainstream media showed up, many of whom were veterans.
Most found it an incredibly frustrating experience. Several people got up and left, explaining that they could not stomach the “spin” offered by President Obama’s Cabinet.
“I just cannot follow the rhetoric,” one veteran said as he exited the room only a few minutes into the townhall.
Lines wrapped around the room, as attendees waited their turn to ask questions of the Cabinet secretaries. One woman, Tracy Chevalier, talked about her Cuban heritage and explained that the health care in America, from her experiences, was far more accessible than what she experienced in her home country.
Then Chevalier asked if the panelists could answer her question simply with a “yes” or “no.” She requested that the American public be allowed five to seven days to review the bill before it is voted upon in Congress. The crowd broke into thunderous applause and cheering.
Secretary Kathleen Sebelius responded, “I would hope you would allow me more than a yes or no answer on this one.” The crowd then began to boo.
That was the overall tone for the entire townhall. Booing. Protesting. General hostility towards the Cabinet. All of these were further powerful after Secretary Sebelius admitted that the federal employees’ benefits would remain the same, even after a public option was added, with screaming and booing even louder from the crowd. The hour and a half-long meeting closed with dozens of people still in line to ask questions.
Glenn Ellerbe, president of Acadiana Tea Party in Lafayette, La., explained that he needed Secretary Hilda Solis to carefully review the cap-and-trade legislation, as it would greatly damage Louisiana’s energy-based economy.
“It will be a cold day in hell before he (Obama) socializes my country,” he said. This statement has been used since by the Associated Press and has been played on the Rush Limbaugh radio show and Hannity on Fox News.
The crowd went wild, with everyone standing up and cheering. Some people began chanting “U-S-A.”
It is likely that the national media outlets present were not anticipating such an anti-Obamacare display. However, there was no denying that the nearly all of the hundreds of folks gathered in that tiny room in Reserve, La., were not there to join the ranks of ACORN but instead, to show their disapproval of the health care legislation presented by the Obama Administration.
And there’s no leftist PR spin doctor who can remedy the public opinion ill that is plaguing them more and more as the debate continues.

Please get your facts straight about Obama’s birth certificate. He was born in Hawaii. Are you foolish enough to believe he could be elected without proof of his birth? I agree with you Ted, if this plan is so good the politicians should also be on the same plan. But theirs is better, why not put the politicians on the same plan as our Veterans, I bet they fix that. For the actual hours they work, all in Congress should be considered “part-time employees” and should have no benefits ( health care, retirement, etc.). And if they want to travel home on their 4 day weekends, it should be at their own expence. And for part-time employees they are making way to much money, let’s cut that back to about $20,00.00 a year or pay them minimum wage for actual hours worked. I am willing to bet if their salaries were equal to their average constituents there would be less crooks and more who actually want to improve our great country. My first question is why are so many people needing so much health care these days? Why are we so anxious to pop a pill for every little problem? Do we think that health insurance or health care should be less than our car payment? Should a Doctor get paid $18.00 from our government for an office visit? What happens when we put Doctors on a “salary” that doesn’t cover their loans/insurance and other expenses? Do we now send them to medical school on our tax dollars? What happens when the government no longer wants to pay for that new fancy scanning machine or for people to get that new fancy scan to tell them that they have a brain tumor? Will only people like Ted Kennedy be able to afford to go to the back alley contra-banned scan? Should I really have to pay for all those people who don’t eat properly, drink or smoke (well that also will be contra-ban), take drugs, are irresponsible and get sexually transmitted diseases, want sex changes, have their 5th abortion and decide to implant 12 embryos? Just a few questions, can anyone answer them for me????

Think this through! There is an obvious reason Obama desperately wants this Bill to pass before it’s content can be thoroughly understood, even by those who must vote on it. It is bad for your future health, it is bad for our nation, and it MUST not become law in any current or similar form. Start over in the light of day, with a simple outline of provisions made available to the public long before a vote and you might come closer to honest government!! If this passes I will personally spend the rest of my life’s money and time to bring about political defeat of those responsible.

These people also choose to interview the only doctor in Reserve. True fact. He is. But the fact that was conveniently left out was less than a mile away we have LaPlace, LA which not only has more than enough doctors, but a hospital. There is also a hospital in Gramercy (about five miles away) which they converged on and they have doctors as well. This was aired on the local news which didn’t mention these facts. Look on Mapquest and see how rural we are here. They probably picked Reserve to show off the new Veterans Home and the new Army National Guard building. These were a great backdrop for the administrations big show.

My daughter and I attended the Reserve, La. Obamarama Rural Talk show. We saw tables with sign-up sheets asking for name,email etc…I asked the attending young girl and older woman if the sheets were for Acorn..They said no, just for attendance-counting. They had on ” Leadership” t-shirts. Afterthefact and, after signing in, I am definitely having second thoughts about where our signatures will end up. We were there in red, white & blue garb, with our flag to show our disdain for the Obamanopoly that is so very obviously taking place in our wonderful country. The news media..AGAIN.. played down the anti-obama theme of this meeting…Keep government out of our lives. ASK FRance/Canada if socialized medicine works. What part of stupid does it take to keep dumping more and more of our money in to failing programs? WHERE ARE OUR LEADERS AGAINST THIS TYRANT?????

As one who has been diligenty woking for President Obama’s health care reform, I wish to inform you that there are three principals: Lowering insurance and other rising costs of healthcare for all Americans, Assuring that all Americans have a choice of their healrhcare providers including a government provider, and three, Insuring evey American whether they can afford it or not.
Sociialized healthcare? Only is you choose the government subsidized plan if you believe it is better than the major healthcare plans out there or one you already have and are happy with rising costs and not being covered for pres-consisting illnesses.
I hacw met people who are hooked with a job because the husband had a heart attach. If she changes jobs, he would nor be covered. At the moment they are so strapped by the healthcare costs which is their major budget expense, that they may have to give up their home to pay for his insurance and care.
I have met many who say that healthcare is their number one budgeted payment monthly, even those who hve not been desperately sick. Their insurance just rises monthly.
Interesting fact: The pharmaceutical companies are for this because the more people who can under the reform have healthcare, the more who will use their meds. How’s that? And they mke plenty now. I have not heard of the government buying drugs in quantity such as Canada, where many get their pharmaceuticals cheaper, but believe that would be a good idea. Maine, I think, already does this. Not sure if I have the correct state since this is not one of the three principals President Obama wants.
Choice seems to be the top issue. Old veterans mostly are die-hard rightests and enjoyed quality care for vets. The current vets are not taken care of well. They have medical problems that the Veteran’s Hospital is not addressing. The biggest is PTSD. Nobody signed up for National Guard expecting to be scooped up for fighting abroad. Those who thought they would be sent home in a year were kept. Those who came home, even with PTSD, were sent back. There have been more suicides amongst vets than anytime in history. They don’t get to come home. These wars, one of which had no reason for us to start, are going on longer than any wars America has fought.
Back to heathcare for ALL Americans, even those who can’t afford it, is necessary. Mant conpanies can no longer afford to give health care to employees. A friend of mine had work insurance many would not except. He eyes and skin were yellow and she was dropping weight at an enourmous rate. It took driving to another county in her state to see an oncogist who then had to check her insurance before a biospy. Even hospitals sent her to others. After two months of this, the doctor she saw twice after driving while sick 1 1/2 hours called her and tld her she had stage three pancreatic cacer which was inoperable. She is not in a hospital, but alone at home getting sicker and sicker. After 3-4 chemo treatments that made her sicker, she has decided not to take anymore and just die. All this foolishment of having work insurance very few would accept and being sent all over the place for two months as she grew to stage three pancreatic cancer. She needed care ASAP, but didn;t get it.
There are many people who are poor or homeless that need to use ER’s as their clinic. Most places don’t have walk-in clinics anymore. Do you have doctor’s who pracise at the ER you need to get to for urgent care? Have you noticed how filled up the seats are? Have you had to sleep in the ER because there were no beds? All those poor and homeless would be covered with their choice with healthcare and their right to coose their own healthcare professional.
The lady who louly proclaimed she had better healthcare in our ciuntry than in Mexico doesn’t know what a broken system we have, She only compares Mexico to the USA. No reason for her to comment because she knows nothing else.
Many people travel to China, Thailand, and other foreign countries for surgery because it is CHEAPER ans BETTER. Doesn’t that tell you something? We have more babies born dead than ant other developed country, more unnessary C-sections than any other developed country, the cost here is higher for better surgery, medicine is less and sometimes holistic. It works in other coutries better than here.
I can go on with our broken healthcare system. What isn.t broken will be left alone and what is broken will be fixed. Too bad the people of the country town of Reserve could not follow the Obama people and discuss healthcare intelligently. They didn’t come to listen, just to boo and bitch!
I see a vet who sits outside my grocery store. The VA won’t take care of his hernia. He lives in an abandoned home left from Katrina. He has a sign and tries to collect just enough to buy food to eat each day.

As soon as our leaders in all three branches of the government agree to have themselves and their families health care provided by whatever system they design and approve of I will consider the plan for me. The same goes for Social Security. Why is it that they develop these great “plans” but never partake of them themselves? Do you know what their present health care plan consists of? Hell its pretty good. Why not just give us that one? Guess who pays for it. How about their retirement plan? Work for one day and you receive a lifetime of full retirement. These are OUR public servants who have become so self righteous that they consider themselves lords and kings. Kate it is good that you are involved but please learn more about what you are doing and about your country’s legislative process. Yes there are folks without insurance but this is not the way to address that.
Lady, you are clueless; no wonder you are working for Obama’s plan. The single biggest cause of rising healthcare cost rests with tort lawyers, the very thing Obama will never touch. Doctors perform unnecessary tests for the simple reason that they are trying to protect themselves from lawsuits. Malpractice insurance costs are sky-high because of it and we all pay the price. Obama and his cronies are liars and the “change” he is bringing stinks.

But , I have to say that whileyou may be ’supporting’ health care reform and working hard to get Obama’s plan in effect, you have no idea what is in the plan.. you know what Obama and his admin has told you.. but the items I have seen and heard about it, from those who have read the bill, tells me that Obama is NOT forthcoming about what is in there.. HE doesn’t know what is in there… Nationalization of healthcare is not the fix for the best health care in the world. Yep, needs help. of 43+million uninsured, less the illegal immigrants( about 20+ million.. ) we end up with about 4 million that really need help. cannot get insured today or tomorrow.. we dont need to spend trillions to fix their problems and kill the medical industry, including research at the same time, much less allow theGovt to run our helath care.. think Medicare and HMO’s.. Medicare sets the rates for the govt care.. Insurance wants to pay a % of that rate.. ever since we got HMO’s doctors have been getting screwed- torts, CYA medicine, all create more problems. Technology is one of the biggest cost increases. There is no way that a govt that cant run its own business or even get the Senate Cafeteria to break even can manage health care, besides IT ISNT THEIR BUSINESS OR CONSTITUTIONAL TO DO SO. Gov’t purpose is to do what you and I cannot do individually, or collectively— protect the borders, get the mail delivered, regulate commerce, etc Obama’s plan is all about more control and his ego. If it is so great a plan, why does it have to be passed without Congress or the people knowing what is in it- would YOU vote for such a plan and not know what you are voting for? If you did and you represented me.. you would be out of a job the next election. If it was just Obama MAYBE you could trust it.. but Pelosi and Dodd are in it .. no way to trust them, Heck, Barney may be in it too.. he’s never held a job, but thinks he can run the Financial business.

Obviously you have not read the healthcare bill. If you had read it then you would know that if you do change insurance companies you will have no choice but to go on the governments plan. You and your friend with the husband who had the heart attach also do not know the law concerning the 30 days after you loose your health care. The only way they can deny you for a pre existing condition is if you currently have no health care. You need to do your homework before you open your mouth the next time.
If Kate would bother learning to read and read the Constitution, she would see that our government has no business in the health care business. That is not their function. She might also try looking up the following words in the dictionary: Communism, socialism, liberalism. Notice much difference?
